Donald Laverne King son of Harry Laverne Stafford and Flossie Fay Schenck Stafford, was born on October 14, 1918. Then on October 22 his mother, Flossie died, shortly after that he was taken from the hospital to his uncle Roy and aunt Zella Stafford King's home. On November 9th, 1918 Donald was adopted by his uncle and aunt and became known as Donald Laverne King. The birth mother's wishes were for her son to be called Verne. So the adopted parents honored her wishes and to many friends and family he became Verne King. Verne graduated from the Villisca High School in 1937. After high school Verne chose to do farming with his adopted father, living in the area of Villisca, Hepburn and Gravity. It was in Gravity that Verne met Jennie Sampson from Brazil, Indiana in 1948, then the following year Verne and Jennie were united in marriage on August 14, 1949. Verne continued to farm with his adopted parents and raised his children on the farm. To this union two children were born: Shirley Ann King of Clarinda and Donald Laverne King Jr. of Clarinda. Verne farmed the same farm for 43 years while raising his family and helped care for his adopted parents and his birth father who lived down the road. Verne was very proud of his family. Donald married Jane Murphy in July 1979 and they have three sons; John and wife Jill whose children are Nathan, Callie, Taylor and Isaac, Justin and his children are Jenna, Jillian and Jordan all from Clarinda, and Ryan and wife Jamie whose children are Chloe and Alex from Fargo, North Dakota. Verne and Jennie retired from the farm in 1991 leaving the Gravity area and moving to Clarinda so they could enjoy their grandsons. Verne held many different positions in the Gravity United Methodist Church before becoming a member of the Clarinda United Methodist Church. One of the last requests Verne had was to tour the new United Methodist Church, and he did so on the day before he passed. Preceding him in death are: Jennie King his beloved wife of 61 years; Harry and Flossie Stafford, birth parents; Roy and Zella King, adopted parents; Bertha Stafford, step mother; two half sisters, Lorene Stafford Triggs and husband Merrit Triggs from Mount Ayr, Iowa and Thelma Stafford McPherson and husband Alex McPherson from Wheaton Illinois. Donald Laverne King will be buried in the Washington Cemetery in Gravity Iowa next to his beloved wife Jennie.
