A Clarinda Police officer was injured during the apprehension of a suspect at about 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 8.

According to the Clarinda Police Department, officers attempted to stop a bicycle operated by Kevin Duane Hoyt, 56, of Clarinda after dark with no lighting. The suspect failed to obey the order to stop and fled from officers. He exited the bicycle on foot and went into Ding’s Honk-n-Holler Liquor store at 900 E. Washington St.

A violent struggle ensued with the suspect and the officers inside the business and several thousand dollars of inventory was destroyed. One officer sustained injuries to his forehead and nose during the struggle and was taken to Clarinda Regional Health Center for treatment of his injuries. The officer was treated and released. The officer is expected to return to duty by the end of the week. The names of the officers were not released.

Hoyt is charged with felony assault on a police officer, possession of methamphetamine, fourth-degree destruction of property and interfering with official acts of a police officer. Hoyt is being held at the Page County Jail on $8,300 bail.
